"The Angel on the Radio", by John Kass
She is Shelby Houston, eulogizing her Dad, killed in the line of duty. Truly, an angel.
I have long considered John Kass to be the exemplar of one who embodies all the characteristics one should possess to be a true journalist, “as in days of old”, as Sir Winston put it. A masterful writer, a huge, caring and sensitive heart, bravery and grace and courage under fire, as he exhibited when he was so cavalierly and cruelly cashiered by the Chicago Tribune for speaking the unvarnished truth about George Soros and the damage he is doing to our country— all qualities so sadly missing among The Eloi who have the gall to call themselves “journalists” today. I urge all to check out his new website, johnkassnews.com, for a rare taste of honest, truthful, hard-hitting, journalism.
He has just published one of the most poignant, inspirational and hopeful columns one can ever read- and that’s saying a lot for anyone who has followed his writings over the years.
The scene is set by commenting on the hurly-burly which has, sadly, come to characterize the Most Holy Season celebrating the birth of Jesus, it is “just too easy to be distracted and forget what is important.”
He makes it clear that he does believe in angels and, “[i]f we’re lucky, sometimes an angel appears out of nowhere to remind us of what’s important.”
He then relates how he came to be visited by “The Angel on the Radio.” I simply do not have the words , or the mastery in putting them together, which Mr. Kass possesses, so I cannot recommend too highly reading the entire column, which can be found here. But, here are a few highlights, including a link (double click to open) to a heart-wrenching video of this powerful -angelic?- young lady giving her Dad’s eulogy. However, I will add my own personal note- you cannot be prepared enough to watch this beautiful young lady paying tribute not only to her Dad but to Jesus Christ as well as the hope that her Dad’s killer might one day find Jesus himself. It is one of the most powerful moments I have ever seen.
It was voice of the young woman, Shelby Houston.
She was delivering the eulogy for her father at his funeral. Richard Houston was a 21-year veteran of the Mesquite Texas Police Department. A few days ago, he died in the line of duty, shot to death while responding to an argument in a parking lot. A woman had confronted her husband, who was with his girlfriend. They began fighting and the husband allegedly shot Richard Houston before turning the gun on himself.
It was an amazing eulogy, that you may see here. But be prepared.
As I thought of how to approach this experience, especially humbling after watching the video of this incredible young woman, and hoping to get this message to as many as possible, it was impossible to avoid the song which kept playing in my ear and which, I am quite certain, will remain as an “ear worm” throughout the Holidays, the magical Abba hit:
In his short conclusion, John Kass demonstrates, once again, why I and so many like me across the country consider him the best of the best:
Are there angels? You may not think so. Years ago I would have agreed with you. But I know they exist.
It’s not magic or sorcery. They speak to us in different ways. They don’t demand we listen. They invite us to listen.
And if only we could scrape away that hard bark that we’ve grown around our hearts, more of us might be able to hear them.
May you and your family be visited by your own angels in these Sacred Days - -we are beyond fortunate in that ours will be arriving for their Christmas visit in a day or two- -and may your angels bring you the Merriest of All Christmases!
