President Washington Would Like A Word
On his special day, he asks: What have you done with the country we created?
On this Presidents’ Day, as we survey the smoldering, rotting, burning wreckage our major cities have become, and try to decipher the latest inanity uttered by our current President, it might be interesting to wonder what The General would think of what has become of the beautiful jewel he so prominently helped create. As the author of a thoughtful piece this morning entitled On Presidents’ Day, Washington and Lincoln Speak to Us from Their Graves put it:
If Washington and Lincoln could somehow be resurrected and transported into the present, neither would recognize what America has become.
What would this towering giant of a man, a man of “deep faith, wisdom, courage and persistence” think of the wreckage left behind by “men” who are, by comparison, vermin, such as the current occupant of the White House and some of his sycophants:
Joe Biden gaffe: President has major brain fog mid-speech despite reading from teleprompter
In the article, speaking of The General and the 16th President who many consider to be the other greatest President in our history, the author had this to say:
Washington’s final gift to America was his Farewell Address, calling it “a warning from a departing friend.” It was so profound and in demand that it was reprinted more than the Declaration of Independence. Prophetic in nature, it warned of three sources of internal peril to liberty in the American Republic. And these are more relevant now than ever before:
The failure of citizens to be well-informed;
Internal division because of party factions and hyper-partisanship; and
The decline of religious obligation and national morality.
Lincoln wanted to prompt Americans to think and be vigilant by asking them, “At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected?” He answered that question, stating, “If it ever reaches us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time or die by suicide.” On another occasion, Lincoln said, “The people… are the rightful masters of both congresses, and courts -- not to overthrow the constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert it.”
After his reelection for a second term, shortly before his assassination, Lincoln observed that “…corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.”
Speaking of truly existential threats from within, what would this President:
Think of this hate-filled, petty, vindictive President, who rarely had a good thing to say about the country which elected him not once but twice to its highest office?
What would The General and Mr. Lincoln think if they came back and were informed that this person is being seriously — repeat, seriously — considered to be the nominee of one of the major political parties for President of the United States?
What would The General and Mr. Lincoln think if they could come back and see what has been done to what some call (including this writer) one of the most beautiful cities in the world, among others?
Would The General perhaps, if asked to put in words what he sees upon his return, echo what the author of a recent article, highlighted below, entitled I never thought I’d see?
There are days when I wake up in an America I hardly recognize. Some of that is my age, but much of it is astonishment. A part of me is thankful that my grandparents are not alive to witness what we all are. They would not have tolerated what we now take for granted.
I never thought I’d see….

Cry.
